Kalamata is an ancient town with roots back to 2600
BC. The greater area is trimming with fortresses, old mansions, Byzantine
churches and monasteries, reminders of the brilliant historical past. Modern
Kalamata was built by the French in the 19th century.
Nowdays, is an important trade centre and a principal port of Peloponnesus.
Starting from our base, that is located in the modern local marina, you have
the possibility to sail and explore attractive places which are a delight to
visit, protected small ports and unspoiled hamlets and anchorages.
Don’t miss the spectacular caves of Diros, the sandy beaches of Elafonissos
island, Kithera with its picturesque small harbours, the attractive Koroni
with its town built on the step slopes partly inside the Venezian fort and
of course Monemvasia with its old fortified village of Byzantine origin.
Weather & Wind
The weather over the land sometimes affects the weather
further out over Messiniakos Kolpos and there may be squalls in the gulf.
The prevailing wind blows normally from the West into the bottom of the Gulf
and then curves to blow from the South West and finally from the South at
Kalamata.
