Island Ilovik - Losinj Archipelago

Ilovik - The only settlement on the island, on the north-eastern coast in the lee from the north-eastern wind due to the neighbouring islet of Sveti Petar, is the village called Ilovik. The village has an environmental value. It developed two hundred years ago, when the labourers from Veli Lošinj permanently inhabited the island, by purchasing the land from the bishop of Osor.  It is the southernmost inhabited island of the Lošinj archipelago. Village of Ilovik  has 170 inhabitants.

Ilovik is said to be the island of flowers because almost around every house there are oleanders, roses, eucalyptuses and other flowers; the flowers on the island are part of the islander’s way of life. 

The position of Ilovik is very nice, it is situated in a small bay protected from the north by the islet of St. Peter on which there is the local cemetery. The sea along the shore is shallow and not far from the village there is a sandy beach, as well as on St. Peter’s islet.

The island has two shops, a post office and a tavern. Enjoy the quietness and solitary of a small island, as well as the excellent fish restaurant right on the waterfront. You can spend the night in the port.

Note 1: Worth Visiting are the following places:

• Benedictine abbey of St. Paul from the 11^th century on a small island with the same name; a cemetery where even today funerals are transported with fishing boats
• Square stronghold from the 1597, built to control the sea and protect sailors from constant pirate attacks.
• On the mountain Straža there are the remains of a fortress from the Bronze Age.
