National Park KRKA

CAUTION: Any suggested itinerary or route and information provided are not substitute for pilot books and marine charts. We refuse to accept any responsibility for any loss or damage caused by holding on suggested routes or information provided.

The Krka National Park - Proclaimed a national park in 1985; it is the seventh national park in Croatia. It occupies an area of 111 km2 along the course of the Krka River, two kilometres downstream from Knin to Skradin, and the lower course of the Čikola.

The travertine, limestone sediment from water, which builds the travertine curtains, sills, beards and other geomorphologic forms, is the fundamental phenomenon and principal feature of the National Park. The falls are a biodynamic creation, the living travertine constantly growing today as well, through the sedimentation process.  The Krka River rises at the foot of Mt Dinara not far from Knin. With the drowned part of the mouth, it is about 72 km long. The total area of its basin is 2,088 km2. The mean annual flow across Skradinski buk (waterfall) is 55 m3/s, and when there are heavy rains in the hinterland this can rise to over 350 m3/s. Krka, with its seven travertine falls of Bilušića buk (22.4 m), Ćorića buk or Brljan (15.5 m), Manojlovački slapovi (a series of falls 59.6 m high with a main step of 32 m), Rošnjak (8.4 m), Miljacka slap (23.8 m), Roški slap (25.5 m) and Skradinski buk (17 steps with a total height of 45.7 m), and a total drop of 242 m, is a phenomenon of nature and the karst.

Along its course through the karstic Dinaric Alps, the Krka Rivera cut out a beautiful canyon containing breathtaking waterfalls and rapids, all immersed in rich vegetation. The highest fall is called Skradinski Buk (46 m).

The Krka, as many yachtsmen already know, is navigable from its mouth to the picturesque town of Skradin.

The islet of Visovac (top right corner photo)  is also worth visiting. Lying on a place where the Krka flows into a lake, Visovac represents a true oasis of peace and quiet with its old Franciscan monastery that dates back to the fifteenth century.

The sightseeing of Skradinski buk is a cruise and it lasts for about 2 hours:
- The walk on the paths and small bridges which follow the formation of the waterfalls
- The visit to the facilities for presentation which has been included in the price of the entrance ticket (the sightseeing of the mills with appropriate contents: ethno-collection, stamping mill, rolling devices, mills and the weaving mill with professional presentation and demonstration.
- The other facilities (a souvenir shop, buffet, etc.)The sightseeing of Skradinski buk continues only by vessels of the Public Institution NP “Krka” situated on the upper flow of the river Krka to the island of Visovac or to the Roški slap - what is extra paid.

The excursion to Visovac which lasts for 2 hours includes:
- the sailing on the upper flow of the river Krka
- the visit to the Franciscan monastery - church and museum, as well as the sightseeing of small island which lasts for half an hour.
